Practicum Experience

As part of my graduate program at CSU Fullerton, I was an assistant instructor in a practical course designed around a teaching component of at least 45 hours. Hours included both collaborative observation hours and solo teaching hours. Solo teaching hours consisted of designing my own unit and implementing it over the course of four 3.5 hour class sessions totaling 14 hours.

Teaching was done in conjunction with and under the support of a current English Language Instructor at a designated site. 

For my practicum, I taught under the guidance of Professor Lucas Peterson at Cypress College in its English as a Second Language program. The specific course was Noncredit Intermediate-Low: Integrated Skills.

English Language Centers Experience

I served as an English Language tutor at a variety of positions in both community college and university spaces supporting the English language development of international students, adult students, and students from a wide variety of backgrounds who needed support as they developed English proficiency. 

At Cypress College, for example, I worked at the English Success Center under coordinator Joseph Roger for 2 years, helping to deliver key resources to students from both EL and non-EL courses by guiding them through steps like detailed packets for core English skills, conversation practice, and professional writing. Tutoring sessions consisted of 1:1 and group tutoring to foster communicative practice. 

Then, at Cerritos College, I was a part of the English Success Center under the leadership of Anna Fischer for 2 years, where I provided similar tutoring support to college students who needed help on aspects like resume development, grammar clauses in writing, and pronunciation practice. Through both schools, I encouraged students in their English development, often times as one of the sources of help outside their classrooms and professors. I thereby facilitated a space for effective English practice and use that would have otherwise been lost to such students. 

I did similar work in a pilot/first-of-its-kind English Language program at CSULB. The program was led by director Dr. Scenters-Zapico and its focus was helping international students adjust to academic college life in the United States. I provided that help on the educational side through direct intervention in the form of meetings, conducting group study sessions for students, and developing and sharing progress reports to help professors and administration better understand where their students were doing in terms of English language proficiency.

Private Language Education Experience 

Outside of college and public schools, I have extensive experience working in private educational roles supporting students in their English skills with varying Target Language Use (TLU) Domains, from academic English to interpersonal communication and every day survival skills. Student populations included students who are K-12, college students, and even pre-formal education students who began studies in English skills early. 

Some example work includes my professional collaboration as Assistant Director with the educational team at Creative Learning and Smart Solutions (CLASS) Academics in Huntington Beach, CA, where we provided tailored educational support to students with learning disabilities, and my work with predominantly Vietnamese students and parents at Dojo Academy in Westminster, CA, where we prepared students for academic success in English schools.
